Best PRD: Product Requirements Document Templates for Product Managers

A Product Requirements Document (PRD) serves as a blueprint for both the development team and stakeholders, outlining the product's purpose, features, timelines, and more. By ensuring everyone is aligned on the project's goals and parameters, a PRD aids in streamlining the product development process. Utilizing a PRD template within Notion can further augment this process by providing a structured format that covers all necessary aspects, making it straightforward to create comprehensive and clear PRDs.

Before you start drafting your own Product Requirements Document, review these PRD templates to streamline your process and ensure all critical components are included.

What Should PRD: Product Requirements Doc Templates Include?

Choosing the right PRD (Product Requirements Document) template is crucial for product managers to effectively communicate their vision and requirements. A well-structured PRD template ensures clarity and alignment across all teams involved in the product development process.

  1. Scope and Objectives: This section should clearly outline the goals of the product, including the business and customer needs it aims to address. It sets the direction and priorities for the project.

  2. Functional Requirements: Detailed descriptions of all features and functionalities the product must have. This part is essential for developers and designers to understand what needs to be built.

  3. Non-functional Requirements: Often overlooked, these include system and operational requirements like security, performance, and scalability that support the functionality.

  4. User Stories and Scenarios: Real-world applications of how different users will interact with the product. This helps in visualizing the end-user experience and refining product features.

Selecting a PRD template that comprehensively covers these components will facilitate smoother transitions through the phases of product development and help in crafting a successful product.

What Should PRD: Product Requirements Doc Templates Avoid?

Choosing the right PRD template is crucial for streamlining product development. However, certain elements can complicate or clutter the process rather than streamline it.

  1. Overly Complex Terminology: Avoid templates that use jargon or complex language that could alienate team members who are not familiar with the terms.

  2. Excessive Detail: While detail is important, overly intricate templates can lead to confusion. Opt for clarity and conciseness to keep the focus on essential information.

  3. Fixed Formats: Steer clear of templates that do not allow customization. Flexibility in a PRD template is key to adapt to the specific needs of different products.

Selecting a PRD template that avoids these pitfalls will facilitate better communication and efficiency in your product development cycle.

A Product Requirement Document (PRD) or Product Spec designed for product managers in tech. It allows you to easily build a spec and track pain points, users and personas, implementation plan and success criteria.

I built this template because I was frustrated by how hard it is to keep track of all the relevant parts of a PRD in more conventional tools - the main upside of building Specs in Notion is that it allows you to keep a clean high-level overview, while linking the more detailed pieces in.

Also, I love that I can use the Relations feature to link users to user stories and features - this allows you to always ensure you know for who you’re building something and what pain you’re trying to solve!
